[NEWS] f(x) Talks About Performing as First K-Pop Act at SXSW

[Non-f(x) related parts omitted]

“SXSW is a must for K-pop idols. They are used to big stadiums. It’s the intimacy with fans that makes it special.”

Five member girl group f(x)—also known as Victoria, Luna, Krystal, Sulli and Amber—marked a major milestone in their career becoming the first K-pop act to appear at South by Southwest in Austin, TX. The girls, under SM Entertainment (home to Girls’ Generation, TVXQ!, SHINee and more), were invited to headline an event sponsored by Korean Creative Content Agency (KOCCA).

K-POP NIGHT OUT at SXSW: A Gallery of Korean Stars Both On and Off the Stage in Austin

Titled, “K-POP NIGHT OUT at SXSW,” the girls earned the slot not only for their electro-pop goodies plus snagging various awards and recognition from all around the world. Accolades from just last year include a No. 2 single on the K-Pop Hot 100 with “Electric Shock” (below), their first Japanese single and the Best Dance Performance-Female award at the Mnet Asian Music Awards.

The K-pop darlings finally graced a smoke-filled stage around 1:30 a.m., in front of hundreds in anticipation as fans wildly waved their hands and screaming in unity.

During their short set, f(x) brought out fan favorites like, “Nu Abo,” “Pinocchio (Danger),” “Hot Summer” (below) and “Electric Shock.” Between songs, band member Amber (who received the loudest cheers throughout the night) had fans in frenzy when she expressed her excitement and interacted with fans in English, “You guys are crazy and I love it!” but also added in Korean phrase, “Saranghaeyo,” which means “I love you.”

Following the show, Billboard Korea caught up with f(x), who talked about their performance, who they were sad to miss performing at SXSW and what else 2013 has in store for them.

“We had a lot of fun and it was definitely a new experience,” the group said. “We wish we could have stayed longer.” Like many other K-pop megastars, f(x) was under a heavy schedule and only had a day in Texas with wall-to-wall commitments throughout the day.

“I wish I saw Justin Timberlake, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, Kendrick Lamar and Icona Pop, because I love their music,” added member Amber, a California native. “But it’s okay. We still had a lot of fun!”

After their successful SXSW showcase, one wonders if the quintet will attempt to crossover. “We don’t have plans to officially debut in the U.S., but we will continue to promote our music globally,” the group said. “We are working on our new album for now and we plan to release it sometime this year.”

f(x)’s first SXSW performance was a refreshing and daring move for any K-pop idol to take as the girls were torn from their usual large-scale stage production and extravagant light and sound system.

“I think SXSW is a must for K-pop idols,” Amber reflects. “It’s a must because it is such a different venue. K-pop idols are used to big stadiums. It’s the intimacy with fans that makes it special. It was a crowd of people that were curious about K-pop along with K-pop fans. SXSW definitely broadens horizons.”

“The Cheeky Inner Thoughts of Twenty Year Olds”

Sulli

+ A recent update now that you’ve welcomed your twentieth year.

Most recently I’ve been busy recording for f(x)’s album and preparing for promotions. I hope that you anticipate f(x), who will come with a new image.

+ You’ve turned twenty years old. What did it feel like when you first turned twenty and how does it feel now, after three months have passed?

Because I’ve been active since I was young, it didn’t seem like there was anything special about turning twenty. But now that I’ve actually stepped out of the mold of a teenager and became an adult, I’m very happy and aflutter. Truthfully, it hasn’t been very long yet so I’m not feeling that anything is particularly different. I think my heart feels a little lighter and like there’s more room to breathe.

+ You’ve graduated from school, I think the feeling must have been quite special.

I wanted to become a little closer to my classmates but I don’t think I was able to, so there’s regret left. Now I’ve really become an adult, not a youth. As I’m starting anew as an adult I’m aflutter and anticipatory, but the thought that I have much more responsibility trailing me than I used to occurs. I should become an adult who is mature and knows to take responsibility for herself. And I think that I should take a lot of time to look back on myself from past days and examine points in which I lacked and points in which I was mistaken.

+ Are you fulfilling the things you wanted to try once you turned twenty years old?

I wanted to listen to songs that are rated-19 when I turned twenty. I personally like hip-hop but many of the songs I like are rated-19, so I couldn’t listen to them. So these days I’m listening to rated-19 hip-hop music. The best part of having turned twenty is that I can confidently and comfortably listen to the songs I want to listen to as much as I want. And as I turned twenty and my scope in choosing work has widened a bit, I want to try promoting in diverse fields and show a developed image.

+ What kind of adult do you want to become?

I want to become an adult who is confident not only in myself but in my thinking as well. I think that in about twenty years I will be married and have many children, living happily as I invite the f(x) members over and we eat delicious food.

Krystal

+ A recent update now that you’ve welcomed your twentieth year.

I’m doing solo activities and am attending school after my admission. I’m also recording to prepare for f(x)’s album so I’m spending busy days.

+ You’ve turned twenty years old. What did it feel like when you first turned twenty and how does it feel now, after three months have passed?

When I compare my teenage years to the present, in which I’ve turned twenty, I can’t feel much of a difference because the environment surrounding me hasn’t newly changed. But as I can do many things that I couldn’t do when I was in my teens, I look forward to the coming times. And I feel like my outlook has become a little bit more mature.

+ You’ve graduated from school, I think the feeling must have been quite special.

I graduated high school and have come to attend college, and starting anew as a college student is both thrilling and scary. I think I should act with more responsibility because I’m an adult. The thought that I’ve graduated high school makes me happy, but it also gives me mixed feelings as well. And I want to wear a school uniform again.

+ Are you fulfilling the things you wanted to try once you turned twenty years old?

When I turned twenty I wanted to get my driver’s license and go on a trip with a car on my own. I haven’t been able to get my driver’s license yet, but I think I’ll take on the challenge soon. And personally I also want to develop further through a good piece of work and study diligently as I enjoy myself as a college student. And as a member of f(x), showing an image that has matured a level is planned.

+ What kind of adult do you want to become?

I want to grow and develop myself to become an adult who suits her age. And I want to become a Krystal who is confident and assured in front of both herself and others.
